The Hoboken Police Department arrested a Jersey City man for illegally operating a gas-powered moped on City streets.
18-year-old Abdelrahman Ahmed of Jersey City was arrested on June 12, 2023, after Police Officers Paul Quinn and Nicholas Losurdo observed a moped without visible vehicle registration run a stop sign on Willow Avenue. When they pulled the vehicle over and ran the VIN number, it was determined the moped had been reported stolen in New York City in March. Ahmed was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property. He was also issued a summons for operating an unregistered vehicle, failure to stop and not having insurance coverage.
This arrest and vehicle seizure comes just weeks after Hoboken Police conducted a successful campaign to educate riders of certain types of two-wheeled vehicles, including mopeds and e-bikes. This education and awareness campaign focused on the laws regarding riding these vehicles in the City, and what the best practices are for using them safely.
The charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty in a court of law.
